YORK - The York High School wrestling team has a lot to smile about after pinning down the Western Maine Championship on Saturday, Feb. 3.

As Coach Bryan Thompson put it, it was a great day for York, winning the Western Maine Regional Championship for the first time in team's 11-year history.

"We scored a team-record 202 points, led in the team standings the entire day over rival Mountain Valley High School and Wells High School and gained a huge lead by the semifinals, mostly due to bonus points awarded by pins throughout the day," Thompson said after Saturday's event.

A total of eight York wrestlers reached the finals while six others reached the consolation finals.

Basically, Thompson explained, that made it mathematically impossible for any team to catch York by the 103 pound final.

York had three champions and five runners-up and all 14 weight classes qualified for states this coming weekend in Augusta.

Thompson described the win as "a total team effort in every sense."

York's champion wresters include Reaha Goyetche, 103 lbs., Western Maine Champion, Billy Gauthier, 112 lbs., Western Maine Champion, and Ray Gauthier, 171 lbs., Western Maine Champion.

Regional runners-up are Dan Towers, 140 lbs., Cory Caramihalis, 152 lbs., Nick Mercurio, 189 lbs., and Gene Jones, 215 lbs.

In third place were Alex Hymanson, 130 lbs., Tom Ciampa, 135 lbs., and Carlos Sanchez, 145 lbs.

Fourth-place honors went to Mason Farrer, 119 lbs., Jim Cassotis, 125 lbs., Tom Ross, 160 lbs., and Nate Willette, 285 lbs.
