Readers' Theater presents "Enigma Variations" at the library
YORK VILLAGE - The York Readers' Theater will offer three opportunities to see its latest presentation, Eric Emmanuel Schmitt's "Enigma Variations," at the York Public Library.Performances are set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m.
The action occurs on a remote island, the home of a famous but hermitic author who has written a celebrated novel about his love affair with an unnamed woman. He is joined by a younger man - a journalist - who has come to interview the author. The interview becomes a life-threatening challenge to both men as each exposes the truth about his own inadequacy as a lover and partner.
The actors are Alan Huisman, who has appeared on Seacoast-area stages since 1997, and Wells resident Gregg Trzaskowski, a special educator, who has appeared at the Seacoast Repertory Theater and on The History Channel.
Schmitt's award-winning plays have been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike and are now performed in over 40 countries.
Readers' Theater is a rehearsed and directed production of a play in which the actors read, rather than memorize, their scripts with unchecked and full emotion, while directing their spoken dialogue to the audience as if the audience members were in conversation with the characters. Thus, the connection between audience and cast becomes palpable and intense, as the audience is both in the play and watching it at the same time.
The director is York's own David Newman, a professional director who was head of the Drama Department at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. Newman has directed other Readers' Theater productions, most recently William Nicholson's "The Retreat from Moscow." A lively and exciting dialogue is expected to ensue when Newman leads a discussion with the audience and actors after each production.
Admission is free. Donations gladly accepted.
