A big hole to fill

He was, on balance, the board member we could least afford to lose. And "balance," we think, is the key word here, as it was the most important thing that retiring Selectman Torbert Macdonald, Jr., provided to the town of York. An informed and constant voice for the conservation of our environment, both natural and human, Macdonald served as one of the most formidable checks and the balances for the myriad of development proposals that constantly come before this town. While in private a man of almost startling kindness, in his public role he was often obstinate, stubborn and even downright disagreeable. No matter. Because beneath it all, Torbert Macdonald served us as an honest man doing his best to do right for the public good, and when a proposal got his stamp of approval you knew that it was on merit and nothing else. The resignation of this public servant leaves a hole, and a very big one it is.
