YORK - Last Monday night, Feb. 19, the Lady Wildcats saw their very successful season come to an end when they were defeated in the Western Maine quarter-finals by the Greely Rangers, 54-40.

Greely had defeated York in December by a score of 62 to 50, but that was when Tri-Captain Jenna Yeomelakis was out with a leg injury. York started the season with a record of 2-4 before the Christmas break but after J. Yeomelakis returned they were 9-3 and ready for the playoffs with a fifth-place seed. But the Rangers (15-4) with a full roster of 15 healthy players, including two over six feet tall, controlled the boards and were not to be denied.

J. Yeomelakis opened the scoring for the Lady Wildcats with a trey from the wing and when sophomore Meredith Reid came up with a steal and went end-to-end for a breakaway bucket, the many loyal York fans looked for it as a positive omen. But it was not to be.

Megan McDevitt (team high 10) sparked Greely with an assist to Holly Leighton and then a strong baseline move of her own. York countered with a feed from sophomore Laney Yeomelakis to Stephanie Plaisted, who then added a pop from the wing. But Greely nailed a pair of free-throws and led 9-8 when they called time at the 3:29 mark.

L. Yeomelakis scored again on a feed from Reid, and Kortnee Cribby nailed a pair of hoops from long range to give the Lady 'Cats a 15-14 lead at the quarter.

But York had already picked up six team fouls and Greely would sink nine of their first 10 free-throws.

Morgan Taylor (game high 16) added a pair of free-throws and a pop from the corner on a pass from sophomore Kim Rigano. Reid blocked a pair of shots - unofficially four for the game without committing a foul - but the Greely defense held York to five points in the period and took a 25-20 half time lead.

In the third period, Greely would foul Taylor every time she made a move for the basket and the Rangers charged to a 46-33 lead at the end of three quarters. Then Greely went into a deep freeze and York could only score seven points in the fourth period, which made the final score Greely 54, York 40.

The York fans were treated to an exciting season and while they will certainly miss the six graduating seniors, they can look forward to the three returning sophomores and three juniors who saw plenty of action this season.
