Lady Wildcats tame Bull Dogs but fall to the Tigers

YORK - The girls' ice hockey team traveled to the Portland Ice Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 27, to face Portland High School in the first round of the league tournament.

Nicole Fuller of Portland gave the Lady Bull Dogs a 1-0 lead with a wraparound goal in the first period.

Megan Yorke tied the game in the second period on a breakaway goal, but Fuller gave Portland a 2-1 lead with her second wraparound goal of the game.

York got a power-play goal when Katherine Hird centered a face-off and Danielle Clements deflected the puck past the Portland net minder for a 2-2- tie.

In the third period, Yorke forced Portland to commit a hooking penalty as she skated in alone on the Portland goaltender, but Yorke was able to finish the play and slide the puck past the goal line for the game winning goal.

The Lady Wildcats sealed the game with four minutes to play when Linnie Blais made a long lead pass to Lauren Coupal that sent her in alone and she drilled a high shot over the goaltender's glove for the 4 to 2 victory.

In the second round of the playoffs, York played at Biddeford and the Wildcats were unable to tame the Lady Tigers as Biddeford extended their undefeated season with an 8-0 win over York.

Three York seniors - Megan Yorke, Lauren Coupal and Katherine Lindbom - will participate in the league's All-Star game on Sunday, March 18, at the University of Southern Maine.

The JV team will be participating in a tournament at USM beginning on March 14.
