Gauthier, at 171 pounds, competed at the 43rd New England Wrestling Championships held at Hill House Arena in New Haven, Conn.
Gauthier lost his first match of the night to Andrew Jardim of Carver High School in Massachusetts.
"He dominated the first period 5-0 and had Jardim on his back, but eventually lost by pin in the late third period," said Coach Bryan Thompson.
Because the format of the tournament is follow-the-winner, he had a small glimmer of hope of re-entering the consolation rounds on Saturday when Jardim went on to win his second match, but was eliminated when Jardim lost in the quarterfinal round of the 22-man bracket.
"Ray finishes his season 27-6, Western Regional Champion and Class B State Champion at 171 pounds," Thompson said.
York's wrestling team and other athletes will be honored during the Winter Sports Awards this Thursday night, March 8, at 6:30 p.m.
