YORK - The York Youth Hockey girls' middle school team traveled to North Yarmouth Academy on Feb. 27 to play what has been deemed as the first-ever, all-girls middle school ice hockey Game in the state of Maine.

York faced off against the NYA Middle School team.

The York team came up a bit short in being defeated by a score of 2-0.

The NYA team was a bigger, more physical team than York. The York team consists of players in fifth- through seventh-grade, while a majority of the NYA team was made up of eighth-graders.

The York coaches all commended the York girls for playing with the most intensity they have seen this season.

All in all, it was a very close and evenly matched game, and both teams were very pleased with the attendance of the many cheering fans for both clubs.

It was such a success that coaches from York and North Yarmouth have agreed they will continue their collaborative efforts in putting a league together for Maine Middle School Girls Ice Hockey starting next year.

The York players involved in this first-of-its-kind were Ellie Giles, Abby Boisvert, Lauren Durkin, Gabby Boualavanh, Julia Hird, Brynn Vessey, Caroline Hird, Emmie Brennan, Rachel Yorke, Hannah Daigneault, Olivia Drew, Abby Schriefer, Abby Cruz, Olivia Leroux, Colleen Tourigny and Anna Murphy.
