Save money and energy with composting

YORK VILLAGE - Did you know composting saves money and energy?

The Energy Efficiency Committee at the York Public Library is having a compost bin sale through April 2 with a special deal for a limited time.

Compost bins are $39.95, with a regular retail value of $80.

"Please consider purchasing one," said Heather Henriksen of the committee in the announcement of the sale. "It is well worth it."

Reasons to compost include statistics that yard waste and food scraps make up 20 to 30 percent of the garbage created, while composting sends less trash to landfills. Less garbage at the curb means fewer landfills and money saved by the taxpayer in fees for collecting, transporting and disposing of the trash. And that means energy is saved as well.

And if you use your compost, it can improve the environment by improving your soil.

Composting is easy, simple and can be done year-round.

"Your compost bin will not smell. This bin sits on the ground," Henriksen noted. "We will have a sample bin and order forms at the York Public Library this week."
