Joseph McCarthy
YORK HARBOR - Joseph G. McCarthy, 89, formerly of Clark's Lane, died Friday, March 9, 2007, in Sentry Hill.

He was born in New Brunswick, Canada, on July 27, 1917, the son of Warren J. and Rose McCarthy. He graduated from Cheverus Preparatory School in Portland in 1936.

He moved to York Harbor and worked in a local theater where he met his wife, Mary, of 66 years. His love for travel found him enlisting in the Navy at age 23. He received notice to go to Sun Radio School in Darien, Conn., trained for 16 weeks, and then reported to the USS New Orleans in Honolulu, Hawaii. Returning from World War II, Joseph worked in communications at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Church and of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. After retirement, Joseph was involved with the community volunteering on the board of Yorkshire Commons, Meals on Wheels, York Schools, food drives and York Hospital. He enjoyed reading, traveling, eating, walking and visiting. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and watching them play sports.

Having two grandsons working with NASCAR, he watched all of the races. Retirement allowed him much time to travel and enjoyed talking about his Pearl Harbor experiences.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Mary C. (Donnell) McCarthy, who is presently residing at Sentry Hill. He also leaves two daughters, Patricia A. Cote of Raymond, N.H., and Kathleen M. Chase of York Harbor; two sons, Kevin M. McCarthy of York and Joseph E. McCarthy and his wife Nancy of Cumberland; three grandchildren; Heather J. McCarthy of Newton, Mass., Benjamin R. Chase of Catawba, N.C., and Brian M. Chase of Union Grove, N.C., and two great-grandchildren, Maris M. and Garrett R. Chase of Union Grove.

A sister, Genevieve Hunter of Portland, predeceased him.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Atria in Kennebunk and Sentry Hill in York Harbor for all of their love and care.

The Funeral Mass for Mr. McCarthy was held Tuesday in St. Christopher's Church. Burial will be in the spring in the First Parish Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher's Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, ME 03909.
