YHS honors its athletes at Winter Sports Awards

YORK - The York High School 2007 Winter Sports Awards were held on Thursday evening, March 8, honoring this year's star athletes from basketball, hockey, cheering, wrestling and indoor track.

Team Awards included, for girls' basketball, the Most Valuable Player honor to Morgan Taylor; Coach's Award to Stephanie Plaisted; Foul Shooting Award to Morgan Taylor; Ann McManus Award to Jenna Yeomelakis, and 110% Award to Laney Yeomelakis.

For junior varsity girls' basketball, the Coach's Award went to Hana Carey and the 110% Award went to Emma Clark; Emily Graziano received the Freshman Coach's Award and the Freshman 110% Award went to Kristen Boudreau.

For the boys' basketball team, the Most Valuable Player award went to Phil Alibrandi; the Best Defense award was given to Joseph Corsello; the Coach's Award went to Timothy Jones, and the Most Improved award went to Zachary Prugar.

The junior varsity boys' basketball Coach's Award was presented to Jason Gorman.

In cheering, the Most Dedicated award was given to Stephanie Gay and Jocelyn Reppucci.

For the wrestling team, the Most Improved player was Nick Mercurio; the Iron Man Award went to Gene Jones; the Outstanding Wrestler was Ray Gauthier; the Respect Award went to Nathan Hirst, and the Most Pins in a Season award for 24 pins went to Gene Jones.

For indoor track, two Most Valuable Athletes were selected: Andrew Potter and Chelsea Tewell. The Golden Shoe Award went to Lacey Cartier; the Sky High Award to Sibley Blum; the Mad Dog Award to Molly Carl; the Anti-Gravity Award to Regan Cleminson, and the Most Improved Athlete award to Andrew Hirst.

The Winter 2007 All-Star Awards went to Phil Alibrandi and Morgan Taylor for basketball; Meghan Metropolis, Stephanie Morin and Erin McGarry for cheering; Dan Powers, Andrew Loane, Ryan Clauson and Kyle Banfield for hockey, and Chelsey Tewell, Regan Cleminson, Sibley Blum, Lacey Cartier, Molly Carl, Andrew Potter and Patrick Graham for indoor track.

Achievements included the wrestling team with the Sullivan Duals Champions, Western Maine Class B Champions and Western Maine Class B Sportsmanship Award.

Ray Gauthier of the wrestling team was the Class B State Champion and Reaha Goyetche was the Mid-State League Outstanding Wrestler. The team's coaches were honored with the 100 Wins award.

The boys' basketball team was the Oyster River Holiday Classic Champion and received the Western Maine Class B Sportsmanship Award.

The hockey team was the Western Maine Class B Runner-up and team members Andrew Loane, Connor Murphy and Dan Powers were honored as Players of the Month.

The team also presented the Shadow Box dedication to Jason Durkin.

The indoor track team achievements included Class B State Champions Sibley Blum for the pole vault and Chelsey Tewell for the 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash.

The York High School Athletic Department offered congratulations to all athletes and coaches on a successful season.
