Rev. Beverley Tucker
YORK - The Reverend Beverley D. Tucker, 81, died on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at home.He was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Shanghai, China, the son of Dr. Augustine Washington Tucker and Annie Webb Cheshire Tucker. He was a graduate of Groton School (1943), Harvard College (1949), and Virginia Theological Seminary (1952).
During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1952 and as a priest in 1954. He was a missionary to the Japanese Anglican Church from 1953 to 1992, during which time he was the rector of St. Michael's Church, Sapporo, from 1954 to 1969 and later of churches in Kyoto. While in Kyoto he was a professor at Bishop Williams Seminary and Doshisha University from 1972 to 1992.
Beverley and Jean Evelyn Morris were married in Sapporo in 1959.
In addition to his wife Jean, Bev is survived by his sisters, Annie Wise of Virginia, Maria Webb of Tennessee and Elizabeth Eddy of New York; two daughters, Jane Tucker and her husband, George Gilliland, of New York, and Frances Tucker of Massachusetts, and a son, Jonathan Tucker and his wife, Laurie Caldwell, and their son, Augustine Tucker, of Texas.
Bev and Jean retired and moved from Japan to York in 1992 where Bev had often visited his cousin, Winthrop Lee.
A memorial service for Rev. Tucker will be held in St. George's Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. There are no calling hours.
