York teen's outreach project a success
By Jennifer L. Saunders
YORK - When Emma Power began her effort in her York High School Advanced Political Studies class to collect school supplies for children in Sierra Leone, she had no idea what the response to her project would be.During the winter months, Emma visited local elementary schools to share stories of life in Rofutha, a small village where the nonprofit Partners for Education in Sierra Leone is working to build an elementary school.
Last week, Emma reported that although her course work on the project is over, the project is still going strong.
"A total of 36 boxes full of supplies were collected, boxed and labeled," she said. "So far eight of the boxes have been shipped and are on their way to Sierra Leone. I am working on getting the rest shipped, hopefully out of Portland."
Emma has also been working on a grant to help cover the high costs of shipping such supplies to remote destinations like Rofutha.
Tax-deductible donations for the Rofutha school construction project itself be sent to Partners for Education in Sierra Leone c/o Dr. Pamela Goss-Power, P.O. Box 975, Lebanon, NH 03766.
Emma noted that 100 percent of the funds donated go directly to the work of the nonprofit organization.
