Gas station manager charged with selling drugs on the job

By Melissa Wood

YORK - Police have charged John Hanson, 53, of Kittery, with selling marijuana to both adults and juveniles while working at the Dead River Gulf Gas Station on Route 1.

Hanson is charged with aggravated trafficking of marijuana, a higher-level charge that has been brought against him because of the allegation of selling the drug to juveniles.

Hanson is no longer employed by the Gulf gas station but had been its manager.

A report by York Detective Thomas Cryan said that the gas station had been under a narcotics investigation for a period of time.

York police said that they learned about the drug deals at the business after receiving information from a concerned citizen.

During surveillance of the business, police observed Hanson selling marijuana in the rear of the parking lot. Police then approached Hanson, who admitted to selling marijuana.

Police could not confirm exactly how long the drug deals had been taking place at the gas station, but confirmed it had been for a while.

Cryan said at this time the investigation is ongoing with additional charges possible.

Hanson is scheduled to appear to be arraigned in York County Superior Court in Alfred on Monday, March 26.

The Kittery Police Narcotics Unit also assisted with the investigation.
