First Parish Mission Trip Auction, supper are this Saturday

YORK VILLAGE - The First Parish Church will hold its Annual Service Auction and Chowderfest this Saturday, March 24, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall adjacent to the church.

The event is open to the public, where those who attend will find more than 120 items to bid on - including a variety of vacation packages, boating trips, catered dinners, gift certificates and special golf packages at the York Golf and Tennis Club, Ledges Golf Club and the Portland Country Club. There will also be tennis, surfing, baseball, fishing and soccer packages, artwork, jewelry and a wide range of services including babysitting, yard work and home repair.

The auction is held annually to raise funds to send the First Parish Youth Group on its work group mission trip. This year's group of 47 youth and 10 chaperones will go to the struggling fishing village of Lewes, Del., to repair, roof and repaint homes of those unable to afford such work. This will be the 10th such trip, and more than 400 youths from York have previously gone to the Maine communities of Machias, Lubec and Rumford as well as locations in Appalachia and even north of the border into Canada.

The trip expenses run in excess of $26,000, and the service auction is the largest fundraiser. The youngsters also host car washes, a coffeehouse concert and Harvestfest activities to raise money for their trip.

Saturday's event will begin at 5 p.m. with the chowder dinner, followed by the auction, with auctioneer Howard Koeppel wielding the gavel beginning at 6 p.m. Supper tickets are $5 and bidding cards are $1. All are welcome.
