York radKIDS 2007 Personal Empowerment Safety Education Course, sponsored by Compassion 4 Children, is taking registrations for the spring Tuesday sessions for children ages 8 to 12. The session runs weekly from April 24 through May 22 and will be held at Coastal Ridge Elementary School. Class times are 3 to 5 p.m. for the first four weeks with the final class on May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. This course is offered free of charge for York community members. The core elements of the radKIDS curriculum include home safety, school safety/bullying prevention, out-and-about safety, vehicle safety, stranger tricks, personal safety and self-realization of personal power. Casino Night Benefit for Ethel's Tree of Life will be held at the York American Legion on April 21 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Ethel's Tree of Life is a local nonprofit with a mission to serve youth and young adults who live with disabilities and/or special needs by providing transitional training in life and work skills. Admission to Casino Night is $10, which includes entry into a raffle, appetizers and one non-alcoholic beverage. There will also be a silent auction. Tea Time: A Floral and Fashion Presentation with Bill Graham will give you the chance to learn more about putting together your own unique designs with the Old York Garden Club at its April 11 meeting. Two Woodcock Watches at Wells Reserve will be offered April 5 and April 13. Join a Woodcock Watch at the Wells Reserve and learn about a fascinating woods-dwelling shorebird also known as a timberdoodle or bog sucker. For a few weeks each spring, the male woodcock begins a mating performance that includes a spiraling aerial display. While meant to entice the female woodcock, it impresses the people who view it, too. Bring binoculars if you have them and wear warm outdoor clothing. Maine Short Play Festival Featuring Michael Kimball. Acorn Productions welcomes spring with an annual tradition in Portland where selected scripts will run over two weekends at the St. Lawrence Arts and Community Center. A 20-minute play by York's own acclaimed author and playwright, Mike Kimball, will be featured. In Kimball's "Actual Glass," a woman recollects a summer of spiritual awakening spent with a drifter who taught her how to make pickles. Bob Marley will perform April 15 at Inn on the Blues in York Beach. Marley will do two shows at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Marley, a Maine native and University of Maine at Farmington graduate, uses biographical and observational material for his stand-up routines. Marley recently observed his 15th year as a comic. He is one of the few comics to do the complete late-night TV circuit including "The Late Show with David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Craig Kilborn." Mud and Metal: Transformation by Fire, a new exhibit by Scott Tubby and Alice Carroll, will be presented by Heartwood College of Art at its gallery through April 29. The Other Biennial and Sam van Aken: New Transmitters for the Same Old Stupidities at the Whitney. "The Other Biennial" with Eirene Efstathiou, Joe Kievitt, Rob Lieber, Justin Richel, Sam van Aken and Henry Wolyniec will be held from April 5 to May 12 at 492 Congress St. in Portland. Boating Safety Course will teach basic boating safety, safety equipment and the rules you must follow on the water. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Old York Garden Club's Open Garden Days, new for 2007, is a unique garden tour. For 16 weeks, a different garden club member will open their private garden for viewing on Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. beginning May 27. Most gardens are in constant flux depending on nature, the challenges of the site and the whim of the gardener. This garden tour is intended to show real gardeners' works in progress, not necessarily pristine finished projects. The homeowners will be on site to answer questions, discuss plant material and give tours of their personal creations. The Sanford/Springvale Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) Council meets every third Tuesday of the month from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Trafton Center, 19 Elm St, Sanford. HEALTH

Free Melanoma Program Available for Maine Schools. Already implemented in over 450 New England schools, the program is sponsored by the Melanoma Education Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Peabody, Mass., that is having a major impact on skin cancer education in New England. In the 25 to 29 age group, melanoma is the most prevalent cancer and, among women of ages 30 to 35, it is the leading cancer killer. Vulnerability begins at age 12. Schools interested in adopting the program and offering the class will receive a free lesson plan, student video, early detection bookmarks for their students, and a teacher resource CD, all at no cost. To date, 14 Maine schools have been trained in the program. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.

SUPPORT

A Safe Place, a non-profit agency, has been providing support services and emergency shelter to victims of domestic abuse for over 28 years. A Safe Place has offices in Portsmouth, Rochester and Salem, N.H. FMI or to reach an advocate call 1-(800) 854-3552.

Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group has begun its spring session. Living with Loss is free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. All sessions are held on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement conference room of Medical Office Building 16 on the grounds of York Hospital. FMI: call 363-7000.

The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program is seeking volunteer drives to offer cancer patients safe and friendly transportation to treatment appointments. More than 7,000 Maine residents are living with cancer every day. Because of advances in medical research, there will be cures for many. Lack of transportation, though, may leave some of these cancer patients with few options for completing their treatment schedules. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover our toll-free crisis line. Full training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. A new training session will begin soon. Training topics include the dynamics of intimate partner violence against women and men, as well as the effects of family violence on children, relevant legal and social issues and much more. Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. Volunteer Reiki Practitioners are being sought by York Hospital to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. Good Friday, April 6, features a "Tenebrae" Service at 7 p.m. in the church. A tenebrae service is one of the oldest services in Christianity. Based upon the seven last words of Jesus upon the Cross, the service includes readings and spirituals, as the sanctuary gradually darkens with the death of Christ. On Easter Sunday, April 8, First Parish will hold services at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Gina Branagan Connolly will be the soloist. The Senior Choir, under the direction of Wendell Purrington will sing at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Rev. Linda Hirst will share a message for children of all ages, and Rev.
