Evelyn Hackett

YORK - Evelyn G. Hackett, age 96, of York, died March 31, 2007, at home.

She was the widow of Lorenzo Hackett, who died in 1970.

Evelyn is survived by son John Hackett and his wife Barbrah of Oxford; daughter Margaret "Peggy" Bridges and her husband John of Cape Neddick, and son William Hackett of York. She also is survived by a sister, Josephine Ross of Falmouth; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; a cousin by marriage, Eleanor "Pat" Brosius of Alexandria, Va., and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was born in Lewiston, the daughter of Leonard and Josephine "Josie" Brown, and lived in Augusta. She graduated from Cony High School in 1928, Farmington Normal School, c. 1930, and subsequently taught school for two years in North Guilford. She then married Lorenzo and they resided in Milo and Fairfield, finally moving to York in 1938. They raised their children and built a home in York where Evelyn resided until her death.

Evelyn was employed as a fulltime clerk at the York Village Post Office for 21 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the York-Ogunquit United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women, church historian for many years and a volunteer driver for Community Services with many years volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Evelyn was also a member of AARP and the York Historical Society.

Evelyn loved life and family, liked to cook and entertain, visit her son's camp in Oxford with many family members and her daughter's camp at Sugarloaf. Into her early 90s, Evelyn would cross-country ski at Sugarloaf and a huge 80th birthday celebration was held there. Evelyn loved to read, work in her yard and plant flowers.

After retiring, she and her cousin "Pat" traveled extensively with a 19-day cross-country trip plus trips to the Canadian Rockies, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii, Spain, France, Monte Carlo as well as a trip to Italy with her sister "Jo." Both she and her husband were avid deer hunters earlier in their lives.

A Memorial Service will be held at the York-Ogunquit United Methodist Church, 1026 Route 1, York, on April 6 at 4 p.m. Interment beside her husband at the First Parish Cemetery will follow cremation. Evelyn requests family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made in Evelyn's name to the York-Ogunquit United Methodist Church.
