From the Editors

On page one of this issue of The Independent, we published a story that we take no pleasure in.

The information contained in the article came to light during research for a planned article on the differing priorities between year-round residents and those holding multiple residences. Selectman Len Dorrian, as a public figure and outspoken leader on tax issues, as well as a person with multiple residences, was but one person among several whose public property records were researched.

When Selectman Dorrian's Boston, Mass., property appeared on that city's public database listing him as taking a residential tax exemption, we continued to research other pertinent public sources until all the facts were verified.

As professional journalists, we are compelled to let these facts be known. This is especially the case regarding elected officials and those in positions of public trust.

Having presented these facts and Selectman Dorrian's explanation, we now leave the matter to other authorities and the voters of the town of York to address as they see fit.
