York High School baseball looks forward to opening day

By Stan Ross

YORK - Head Baseball Coach Gordon Lewis seemed quite optimistic as he discussed the prospects for this year's baseball team.

York will have plenty of experience with 12 returning players, including senior all-conference pitcher Dan Moran and all-conference, power-hitting outfielder Dan Graziano.

Senior Ryan MacGlashing will see action on the mound and in the infield.

Junior starters returning include all-conference catcher Kevin Maran, who batted .455 last year, and shortstop Matt Haight, who hit .345.

Other pitchers include junior Kal Decato and sophomore Jim Kennedy who "showed great promise as a freshman last year."

Nick Mercurio is expected to see action on the mound and at first base, and Dave Nieves as a pitcher and infielder.

Other juniors include outfielder Jared Turner, Andrew Loane and the Hymanson twins, Alex and Mike.

Matt Prewitt could return to centerfield and lead off after he recovers from an old ankle injury.

Other seniors moving up from last year's junior varsity team are Steve Buoncristiano, Alex Martin and Dave McKinnon.

New to the coaching staff this year are Nick Butler and Tom Haight, while veterans Fred Knox and Ellis Lane will be available as consultants.

York is scheduled to play a preseason game this Saturday, April 7, at home against Lincoln Academy at 11 a.m. and then host Marshwood next Tuesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
