Numbers are down but enthusiasm is up for YHS softball

YORK - York Varsity Softball Coach Lynne Michaud is pleased that she has some returning veterans after graduating 12 players from last year's team.

Athletic Director Ted Welch confirmed that because of the shortage of candidates this year that the junior varsity team, headed by Rob Butler, will practice with the varsity team and will play a reduced schedule.

"We lost many players to graduation but we have a lot of good potential and we hope to make the playoffs again this year," Michaud said. "Based on last year, Fryeburg, Cape Elizabeth, Wells and Yarmouth should be the strength of our league."

Michaud is looking forward to this season with seniors Jolene Ciampa, Becky Enright and Caitlin Keating expected to lead the team.

Other returnees are catcher Glenn Swanson, Linnie Blais and Melissa Enright. Also expected to compete are Marie Depeter, Chelsie Hutchins and a transfer senior infielder, Megan Metropolis.

Welch commented, "Coca-Cola has agreed to sponsor new scoreboards for both baseball and softball and the Leighton family has offered to donate a flag pole that will be dedicated at a date to be announced."

The girls' varsity softball team was scheduled to play its first game of the season on Tuesday at Noble High School. Details were not available at press time.

The team's next game is scheduled for April 10 at home against Marshwood High School at 3:30 p.m.
