Special gathering April 20 for families of children with special needs
YORK - Do you have a child with special needs?Would you like to talk with other parents as part of your support?
If you answered yes to these questions, you will want to keep reading.
Families raising children with special needs who live in the towns of Kittery, Eliot, York, Ogunquit, Wells and the Berwicks are invited to an informal gathering on April 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Family Resource Center, located just south of the York border at Landmark Hill on Route 1 in Kittery.
There will be an opportunity to meet and interact with other families, share experiences and begin to develop a support network.
Families with children who have special needs including autism, Down syndrome, developmental delays and mental health diagnoses as well as chronic health conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy and cerebral palsy, often report feeling isolated and without information to cope with the daily challenges of raising their children.
Since these border towns have no central city or location for the distribution of multiple therapies, resources and support, families must often travel north to Portland or Sanford to receive services for their children, increasing their isolation.
Support and connection can be critical to effectively overcoming the challenges of raising children with special needs. Without local and central access to these, families remain isolated and underserved. Children and families may be missing valuable resources that could impact their health and well being.
The April 20 meeting will offer a chance to meet, share and connect with other families.
Childcare will be available and coffee and dessert will be served.
