York voters support Stonewall grant

By Melissa Wood

YORK - On Saturday, March 31, York voters authorized the town to accept a Community Development Grant requested by Stonewall Kitchen for $400,000 despite the state's decision not to go forward at this time with the grant application.

Town Manager Rob Yandow explained prior to Saturday's vote that the question of whether the town would accept the grant was still an important one for the voters to decide as the state may review Stonewall Kitchen's application again in May. At that time, it will be decided whether the grant remains a possibility this year for the York-based company.

Stonewall had asked for the funds to expand its production capability and thereby create more jobs at its Route 1 facility.

Voters approved the request by a vote of 294 to 67 in the one question election. Stonewall Kitchen paid for the election so that it could be held at no cost to the town and the taxpayers.

The company is nationally known for its jellies, specialty food and kitchen wares.
