YORK VILLAGE - Anyone who lives in Maine knows not to count on spring coming for certain in April.

Yes, there are compensations - like maple syrup, but our students are far more likely to trudge through mud than frolic on green grass when their April break comes.

Rather than railing against the weather, why not plan to spend part of school vacation at the library? Check out books, movies and attend our special programs.

All our spring vacation programs require advance registration, so please call the library at 363-2818 to reserve your spot.

And enjoy your maple syrup until spring comes in earnest!

Vacation events include Art by the Pond Watercolor Party on April 17 at 10:15 a.m., a special vacation edition of Art by the Pond where children will work with local artist Kathy Carter to discover the nature of watercolors. Children can find delight in learning the character of each color and how it "plays" with another. This parent/child class, appropriate for children age 3 to 5, will use a wet-on-wet technique, so prepare to be messy. Class size is limited, so please sign up by calling Kathleen at the library.

Music instructor Michelle Franey is hosting a special "break week" music class on April 18 at 10:15 a.m. for all children through fourth grade. Guitar, contemporary songs and moving to the beat are big hits with the kids. Class size is limited, so please sign up by calling Kathleen at the library.

Two classes of Yoga for Kids will be held on April 18 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. or 2 to 2:45 p.m. Rae Lynn from Yoga on York offers classes for children in kindergarten through grade 4. Yoga is a whole-body practice that benefits both the body and the mind. For a child to participate, a parent must sign a liability form when they reserve a space in the class. Each class's size is limited to eight, so please sign up at the desk in the Children's Room.

Do you ever wonder what animals and plants live naturally right outside of your house? Come join White Pine Programs for an hour of exploration around the library and a glimpse into the natural world On April 19 at 1:15 p.m. Check out natural mysteries and play nature awareness games that engage your senses. Please come dressed to be outside. This program is appropriate for children ages 6 to 9 and their parents.

On April 20 at 10:15 a.m., have fun discussing Thomas Rockwell's "How to Eat Fried Worms." In this story, 11-year-old Billy goes up against the school bully in a challenge - to eat 10 worms in one day. Please have your child read the book in advance, and the book discussion will be followed by the movie. Parents are welcome. Space is limited. Please sign up in advance by calling Kathleen at 363-2818.

"How to Eat Fried Worms" the movie will be shown at 11:30 a.m. on April 20, following the book discussion.
