Planning Board continues Ogunquit Village Estates public hearing to
May 14

By Melissa Wood

OGUNQUIT - On Monday night, April 9, the Planning Board voted to continue the public hearing on Ogunquit Village Estates to its next meeting on May 14 so that the applicant can discuss traffic mitigation options with the Board of Selectmen.

At that next meeting it's possible that the Planning Board will vote on whether or not to approve preliminary plans for the 34-lot subdivision located off Berwick Road.

The Planning Board initially approved the development on March 14, 2005, but its decision was reversed after a lawsuit brought by abutter William Bodack successfully claimed that the board erred in its strict interpretation of the traffic standards ordinance.

Planning Board Chairman Steve Wilkos said both the Planning Board and the selectmen agreed that applicant, Stephen Hallett, meet with selectmen to go over his plans for traffic mitigation at the intersection of Route 1 and Berwick Road before he came before the Planning Board for preliminary approval.

Hallett, or his representative, will be meeting with selectmen at their next meeting on April 17.

Previously, the applicant had made suggestions for traffic solutions in February, but Wilkos said he did not know whether the applicant would be offering the board the same suggestions or new ones.

Wilkos said Monday's public hearing on the development lasted from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and the board heard from about a dozen people, including abutters, town residents and attorneys, including the attorney for Bodack.

Town Attorney Patrick Scully was also in attendance.
