Mix of races and uncontested seats for May election

By Jennifer L. Saunders

YORK - The papers are in, and it will be a mix of contests for the Board of Selectmen and School Committee and uncontested races for the Budget Committee and other posts at the May election.

The filing deadline for nomination papers for the May 19 election was last Thursday, April 5, and when the signatures were counted, the result was a full slate of candidates for the Board of Selectmen and School Committee, with just enough candidates seeking seats on the Budget Committee.

Incumbent Selectman Len Dorrian will run against Kinley Gregg, who previously sought a term in the Maine Legislature back in November, for the one three-year term that is available on the town's governing board.

Local residents Edward "Ted" Little, Michael Ehrenborg and James Adams have all filed to seek election to fill the two years remaining in the term of Selectmen Torbert Macdonald, Jr. Macdonald filed his resignation back in February, effective on the date of the election, due to his ongoing battle with Lyme disease.

For the School Committee, incumbent Mary-Jane Merrill is seeking reelection to one of the two three-year terms on the board as Chairwoman Patty Hymanson announced this winter she would not be seeking another term on the board.

Residents will choose between a field of three candidates - Merrill, Laurie Coffenberry and Julie Eneman - for the two seats on the board.

The three seats on the Budget Committee, meanwhile, are uncontested as none of the incumbents are seeking reelection.

Steve Samborski and Charles Steedman have filed their nomination papers for the two three-year terms available on the board while Frederick Boardman has filed papers to fill the remaining one year in the term of Nancy Eaton, who is resigning as of the May election due to work and family commitments.

For the York Water District and York Sewer District Boards of Trustees and the Town Treasurer's post, only the incumbents - Water District Trustee Ed Walsh, Sewer District Trustee Bob Hoyt and Town Treasurer Margaret McIntosh - are seeking election in May.
