Library Happenings

Library Director Robert Waldman and Liz Reisz, coordinator of library media services for the York School Department, present a hiking boot to Lee Englund, who is this year's winner of the York Reads drawing. The prize of a pair of hiking boots from Timberland perfectly fit this year's selection, "A Walk in the Woods," by Bill Bryson. In choosing the title, a humorous account of Bryson's attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail, Waldman said, "We wanted to reach the broadest audience possible." Next year, Reisz said, the committee is looking into choosing a children's book so "people of all ages can enjoy it and appreciate it." This is the library's third year of getting the community reading through York Reads.

One of the most exciting developments in the use of the library over the past few years has been the tremendous increase in inter-library borrowing. Five Maine and New Hampshire writers are the speakers at a public reading for local writers' program at the York Public Library on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. In conjunction with York Reads, the fine community event organized by the York Public Library, the library recently purchased a hardcover edition of the New York Times best-selling "A Walk in the Woods."
