Wildcats out-slug Hawks, 11-10

By Stan Ross

YORK - Last Tuesday, April 10, the York Wildcats baseball team was finally able to dodge the snow and play outdoors against the Marshwood Hawks.

Previously scheduled exhibitions versus Noble High School and Lincoln Academy had been canceled due to the heavy snow storms. But last Tuesday, despite the bitter cold and a slow infield, York Coach Gordon Lewis seemed pleased with the results.

Lewis used eight pitchers for one inning each.

David Nieves started, and retired the side in order on just 11 pitches. Mike Hymanson, Jim Kennedy, Dan Moran, Kal DeCato, Ryan MacGlashing and Nick Mercurio each took a turn on the hill.

Matt Haight was the "pitcher of record" when he closed out the eighth inning.

Kevin Maran, Jared Turner and Steve Buonchristiano shared the catching shores.

Mercurio and DeCato each had two hits. Haight, Alex Martain and Dan Moran each had doubles.

York scored its winning runs in the eighth inning when Dan Graziano led off with a walk.

Mercurio and MacGlashing followed with singles to load the bases.

Then Moran drove in two runs with a double and DeCato added two more when he reached on an error.

Lewis seemed pleased with the overall result, but noted, "We need to work on our bunt coverage and on holding runners on base."

The team was scheduled for an exhibition at home against Biddeford on Tuesday, April 17, weather permitting, or today, Wednesday, April 18.

The regular season game against Traip has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 26, with the York baseball and softball teams will be on the road at Wells on April 23 and Lake Region on April 25.
