From York to Darfur: special forums planned at St. George's

YORK HARBOR - Town Manager Rob Yandow will be the guest of honor at St. George's Church Forum this week, while next week's focus will be on the tragedy of the genocide in Darfur.

This coming Sunday, April 22, at 8:45 a.m., Yandow will provide an update on town issues and present an overview of the proposed fiscal 2008 budget for public consideration.

The goal, organizers explained, is to provide information so that residents will have the facts to vote responsibly in the upcoming May 19 referendum.

Following Yandow's presentation, there will be a question-and-answer period, and coffee and refreshments will be served.

Then, on Sunday, April 29, at 8:45 a.m., St. George's will host a special forum entitled, "Darfur: What Does it Take For the World to Wake Up?" The guest speaker will be Wells R. Staley-Mays, M. Div., who is on the executive boards of Peace Action Maine and the Portland Branch of the NAACP.

Wells is advisor to the Fur Cultural Revival, the organization of members of the Fur tribe from Darfur who are living in Maine. He will be bringing some members of the Fur tribe with him as he speaks about the genocide in Darfur and what we can all do to help curb the violence.

Everyone is welcome at these special events.
