Div., who is on the Executive Boards of Peace Action Maine and the Portland Branch of the NAACP. Wells is Advisor to the Fur Cultural Revival, the organization of members of the Fur tribe from Darfur who are living in Maine. He will be bringing some members of the Fur tribe with him as he speaks about the genocide in Darfur and what we can all do to help curb the violence. Please join us! Holly-Palooza, a benefit for the Holly family, will be held at Foster's Clambake in York Harbor on May 5 from 4 to 9 p.m. In November 2006, Jim Holly was diagnosed with acute mylogenous leukemia and began immediate and numerous chemotherapy treatments. Jim, his wife Kate and their seven children live in York. Jim is also a 19-year employee of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and an active, much-loved member of his Southern Maine community. He is currently being treated by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and is awaiting a bone marrow transplant. The costs associated with this lifesaving procedure are considerable and are only partially covered by insurance. Laudholm Farm's Native Plant Sale is accepting pre-orders only this year through May 4. Maine Apple Sunday Poster Contest of the Maine State Pomological Society is open to Maine students in grades 4 through 6. Interested classrooms or individual children are encouraged to submit designs promoting the fun and nutritional tradition of apple harvesting on an 8 ½ x 11 paper including name, age, phone number, school and teacher. The winning artist's classroom will receive a $100 donation and an Apple Celebration Party. The winning illustration and slogan will be used to promote Maine Apple Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007. Summer Art Camp at Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk introduces a summer of inspiring visual arts experiences for children ages 9 to 13 called "Heartwood Bound." The camp program provides children with the opportunity to work closely with professional artist/teachers in a creative, supportive environment. York County Kennel Club AKC All Breed Dog Shows, Obedience and Rally Trials will be held May 5 and 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Acton Fairgrounds, Route 109, Acton. The public is invited to observe the various activities throughout the day. Admission each day is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students and free for children under 12 years old. Marshall Store Gallery features "Momentum V," an exhibition of the 2006 New Hampshire Charitable Foundation's Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement grantee, Barbara Rita Jenny, and six finalists, Daisy Adams, Tim Christensen-Kirby, Kristina Logan, Gail Spaien, Carol Stein and Cappy Whelan from April 28 through June 3. In the Dock Level Gallery, "Al Jaeger: Ceramic Landscapes" features organic forms, spare use of glazes and washes, and the textures created by using sand, gravel or coffee grounds to convey the artist's love and respect for his natural surroundings. Mud and Metal: Transformation by Fire, a new exhibit by Scott Tubby and Alice Carroll, will be presented by Heartwood College of Art at its gallery through April 29. New England Steel Band Festival will be held on May 6 at the North Yarmouth Academy Ice Arena, Yarmouth. All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner will be held April 28, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge. Chowderfest to benefit York Community Food Pantry will be held on May 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge. York. All you can eat for $8. Public Bean Supper will be held on May 5 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge. WORKSHOPS The Forest of Maine Teachers' Tours still has openings for this summer. Renewable energy from Maine forests and mills and bioproducts and biofuels will be the focus of this years tours. A Project Learning Tree Workshop will be offered on each tour, with Maine Forest Service Biometrician Ken Laustsen leading a discussion on meeting society's needs for materials, chemicals and fuels through research and development of bioproducts from Maine's forests. Educators will tour renewable energy and wood products facilities, visit active harvests using modern equipment and discuss the information and planning required to practice sustainable forestry with landowners, foresters, loggers, mill owners and scientists. Mental Health Peer Support Training Session will be offered at Counseling Services, Inc., on Route 1 in Kittery. Peer support for people suffering with mental illness has evolved out of a human rights perspective over the last 35 years. Peer Support 101 is a three-hour class offered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to anyone interested in learning more about peer support, including mental health consumers, family members and providers. It is also a requirement for participation in the Peer Support Specialists Certification. Old York Garden Club's Open Garden Days, new for 2007, is a unique garden tour. For 16 weeks, a different garden club member will open their private garden for viewing on Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. beginning May 27. Most gardens are in constant flux depending on nature, the challenges of the site and the whim of the gardener. This garden tour is intended to show real gardeners' works in progress, not necessarily pristine finished projects. The homeowners will be on site to answer questions, discuss plant material and give tours of their personal creations. Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group has begun its spring session. Living with Loss is free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program is seeking volunteer drives to offer cancer patients safe and friendly transportation to treatment appointments. More than 7,000 Maine residents are living with cancer every day. Because of advances in medical research, there will be cures for many. Lack of transportation, though, may leave some of these cancer patients with few options for completing their treatment schedules. Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. Volunteer Reiki Practitioners are being sought by York Hospital to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. York Hospital is looking for Level II Reiki practitioners to provide Reiki services to oncology patients.
