YORK - On Monday, April 23, the Wildcats opened their regular season at Wells and came from behind with two runs in the sixth, but lost by a final score of 6 to 3.

Wells opened the scoring with three unearned runs in the first when, after two outs, an infield error, a single, a walk and a double tallied three runs for the Warriors.

Dan Moran started on the mound for York and after the first inning held the Warriors scoreless until the sixth.

York countered with two runs in the fifth on a walk to Moran, a single by Alex Martin a walk to David Nieves and an RBI single by Matt Haight, but Nieves was

thrown out at the plate on a controversial call, after a long fly to center by Kevin Maran.

The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the sixth when Dan Graziano led off with a walk, stole second, and Ryan MacGlashing followed with a single and also stole second. Then Graziano scored on an error, but Nieves' long drive to deep right was hauled in for the final out.

Wells regained the lead in the last of the sixth when, after one out, they took advantage of two infield errors, two singles, and a SAC fly to right to score three runs and ice the game.

Haight had two singles for York while Hunter Spearin knocked in two runs for Wells and left-hander Sammy Morse pitched a five hitter for the win.

Wells is now 2-1 on the season while York is 0-1.

Tigers upset Wildcats, 10-5

Last Friday, April 20, the weatherman finally relented and let the thrice-postponed baseball exhibition game go on. The sun was bright, and the field was slow, but except for deep water in the home field dugout, it almost seemed like spring.

York tallied one run in the bottom of the first and starting pitcher Dan Moran pitched three scoreless innings.

Both coaches had agreed to play 10 innings so all their players could see some action.

Kal DeCato relieved Moran in the third and was charged with six runs, five unearned, in two-plus innings. Mike Hymanson relieved with the bases jammed and retired the only batter he faced.

York rallied to even the score in the fifth, but Biddeford added three more runs in the sixth plus singletons in the seventh and eighth. The Tigers closed out the game with two final runs in the tenth.

York used six pitchers including David Nieves, Ryan MacGlashing and Jared Turner.

Kevin Maran led the Wildcat attack with a double and a single while Turner used his speed to run out two infield hits. Steve Buonchristiano had a solid double off the left field fence. Maran, Turner and Buonchristiano shared the catching chores.

Head Coach Gordon Lewis used all 16 players and, despite the loss, seemed pleased with their performance against a strong Class A Biddeford team.

Next on the schedule for York is a game at Lake Region today, April 25, followed by a make-up home game versus Traip on Thursday, April 26. Then York will host GNG next Monday, April 30. All games start at 4 p.m.
