YORK VILLAGE - There's never a dull moment at the York Public Library.

AFTER SCHOOL IS COOL

On Thursday, April 26, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., come to the library for an hour of Lego Building or Knitting for Kids. Please register by calling the library at 363-2818. Bring your own Legos and/or knitting supplies and come enjoy creative library time. Siblings are also welcome. This program is for children ages 6 and up.

BOYS READ!

Mike Harris, technology integration specialist the York Schools, will be offering a three-week reading series in May designed especially for boys between the ages of 7 and 10. During these sessions, participants will have a chance to read a book and then act and star in their own movie. Sessions will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. on May 1, 8 and15. Space is limited. ABOLISHING THE SLAVE TRADE

On Friday, May 4, at 7 p.m., York resident Kevin Belmonte will discuss the making of the recently released movie on the life of William Wilberforce, "Amazing Grace." Lead historian on the project and author of a biography on William Wilberforce, a British politician and philanthropist who led the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade in the 19th century, Belmonte hopes to be joined by others involved in the project.

TAKE A STAND FOR HEMLOCKS

Take part in the Citizen Scientist Survey for the detection of hemlock woolly adelgid on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This full-day workshop given by the Maine Forest Service is for members of the community who are interested in completing an annual survey for the presence of hemlock woolly adelgid in an adopted hemlock stand. The survey is done at the convenience of the individual volunteer, and would take approximately one half to one full day in the hemlock stand each year. Participation is limited to 30 people and pre-registration is required. The deadline for registration is May 2. For more information, contact Allison Kanoti at 287-3147.

SPECIAL EVENTS

On May 8, stop by the library at 7 p.m. to meet the candidates for the upcoming election and hear their views on the issues.

On Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m., local writers Katharine Davis, author of "Capturing Paris," and Cheryl Drake Harris, author of "Lily's Ghost," will talk about the art of writing a novel and the spirit that energizes the process.

On Sunday, May 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., enjoy a Coffee House Concert featuring local musicians Curt Bessette, Neil Zweig, Doug Bennett and Stephen Bracciotti. This is the first in a series of live musical events, with a second scheduled for July 28.

IN THE CHILDREN'S ROOM

Weekly programs for children at the York Public Library include Miss Kate's Infant Lap, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.; Preschool Story Time, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., and Toddler Story Time, Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Monthly programs for children and parents include Making Music Monthly, the first Wednesday of each month from 10:15 to10:45 a.m.; Tactile Toddler Time, the second Tuesday of each month from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.; Babies, Boppies and Books, the second Thursday of each month from 10:15 to 11 a.m., and Art by the Pond, the third Tuesday of each month, from 10:15 to 11 a.m.

SPOTLIGHTED PROGRAMS

On Tuesday, May 8, from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m., Tactile Toddler Time combines art with sea life. Create starfish to add to the Sea Life mural in the Children's Room; sponge-paint sea creatures, and search for shells in the shake-and pour-containers. This is the last Tactile Toddler of this season. Hope to see you there! This program is appropriate for children ages 3 and younger and their parents.

On Tuesday, May 15, from 10:15 to 11 a.m., local artist Jean Lincoln will be hosting Art by the Pond. The children will be painting a family birdhouse using acrylic paint. Wear "painting" clothes; this project could get messy! This is the last Art by the Pond program of this season and is for children ages 3 to 6.

ART AT THE LIBRARY

Todd Bezold and Michael Walek, both of York, are celebrating the arrival of spring with a joint exhibition of paintings at the York Public Library through May 31. Both artists draw inspiration from the natural world, preferring to paint from life whenever and wherever possible.
