"Gentleman Jim," the final film in the 2006-2007 Classic Film Series will be shown Wednesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Dunaway Center in Ogunquit.
OGUNQUIT - Ogunquit Performing Arts will conclude its 2006-2007 Classic Film Series season with "Gentleman Jim" at the Dunaway Center on Wednesday evening, May 9, at 7 p.m.
There will be pre- and post-video discussions led by Norman Wilkinson of Ogunquit Performing Arts.
"This film superbly recreates the life story of James J. Corbett, former heavyweight boxing champion of the world," explained Stuart Nudelman in his announcement of the upcoming film.
James John Corbett was born Sept. 1, 1866, in San Francisco, Calif., and died Feb. 18, 1933, in Bayside, N.Y. He was best known as the man who defeated the great John L. Sullivan. He was over six feet tall with a reach of 73 inches.
The media gave him the nickname "Gentleman Jim" because he wore his hair in a full-grown pompadour, dressed smartly and used excellent grammar when he spoke. He was college educated and, in addition to boxing, pursued a career in acting, performing at a variety of theaters. He has been called "the father of modern boxing" because of his scientific approach and innovations in technique, changing prizefighting from a street brawl to an art form.
Errol Flynn plays Corbett, the aspiring San Francisco bank clerk who views his boxing career as a ticket into society's jet set.
The film is highlighted with reenactment of the legendary bout between Corbett and Sullivan in New Orleans on Sept. 7, 1892.
Don't miss "Gentleman Jim," the final film in the 2006-07 Classic Film Series, at the Dunaway Center, 23 School St., in Ogunquit at 7 p.m. on May 9. There is plenty of free parking and admission is free.
