Wildcats win at home and on the road
By Stan Ross
YORK - Last Thursday, April 26, in a make-up of an earlier rainout, the York Wildcats (2-1) hosted the Traip Academy Rangers, winning at home, 6 to 3.
A cold wind, estimated at 20 knots, was blowing from home plate to center field, but Traip got the only home run when Matt Downs blasted a two-run shot to center in the third inning. Traip opened the game with a long double to center on the first pitch by David Nieves, but York turned a quick double play - Nieves to Ryan MacGlashing, who gunned a long throw across the diamond to third baseman Kevin Maran, who slapped a tag on the sliding runner.
Coach Gordon Lewis added, "Nieves was around the plate all day. He didn't give up a walk, and only used 70 pitches to gain his first varsity win."
York sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning and scored five runs as Nick Richard led off with a walk and a stolen base. Then Matt Haight doubled him home and Maran followed with an RBI single. Then, after a walk to Dan Moran, MacGlashing reached on an error. DH Steve Buonochristiano followed with a two-RBI single and York had all the runs they would. need.
Catcher Jared Turner and Haight each had a single and a double and Dan Graziano also had two hits for York.
Last Wednesday, April 25, the Wildcats journeyed to Naples and held on to defeat the Lake Region Lakers.
York opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first. Kal DeCato was on the mound and according to Lewis "pitched four strong innings, but gave up three runs and four walks and the Lakers had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth."
Lewis continued, "Sophomore Jim Kennedy came in with the bases loaded and struck out the next two batters before giving up a walk, to force in a run and then retired the side on a ground ball to second."
In the next inning, Lewis said, the Lakers had runners on second and third with no outs, "but Kennedy retired the side on a ground ball to the mound, a grounder to second and a pop fly to second. Then in the seventh, Kennedy struck out the side to gain a well-pitched save."
Maran handled the catching chores and Jared Turner led the York hitters with a triple.
