Storm damage review continues

By Jennifer L. Saunders

YORK - While the tally could go higher, local officials are estimating about $2 million in damage to roads and public infrastructure as a result of the storm and astronomical tides that literally hit the area late last month.

Meanwhile, the Maine Congressional Delegation applauded the Presidential Disaster Declaration that was issued last Wednesday, April 25, paving the way for funding relief for the many Maine communities hard hit by the storm.

"Our damage estimate is about $2 million as of right now. That is the public side only and does not include any individual or private damage," Town Manager Rob Yandow confirmed, adding the declaration means towns like York can expect some federal financial assistance.

York Emergency Management Director and Police Chief Doug Bracy said there was no question that York County would meet the threshold required for such a declaration based on the amount of public damage, but added that at this point the town has received only about 25 reports of private damage.

Any permanent residents who sustained property damage as a result of the storm are asked to call the York Police Department at 363-1031 to report that information as part of the EMA process.
