A MODERN TAKE ON A CLASSIC STORY. The York High School Players will perform a new one-act play based on Shirley Jackson's classic tale, "The Lottery," this weekend. Pictured here, characters in the play stand at attention as their company's owner speaks to them at a recent rehearsal. Performances are this Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, at the York High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., and are appropriate for anyone middle-school age or older. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and may be purchased at the door. For more information, call York High School at 363-3621.

AUCTION FOR A CAUSE. Stop by Coastal Ridge Elementary School in the week ahead and you just might find exactly what you've been looking for to usher in the spring and summer seasons, while helping the children of Kenya at the same time. Fourth-grade students in Mary Zane's art classes have been hard at work creating beautiful hand-decorated birdhouses, which are now available through a silent auction in the school lobby to benefit the Kenya School Project. Fourth-grader Brooke Sevigny, pictured here, shows just one of the brightly-colored birdhouses available at a bargain through the silent auction, which closes on May 15. The winners will be announced at the fourth-grade music performance that evening, but do not need to be present to win. The Kenya School Project was established to educate and empower Kenya's poorest children by providing schools with much-needed texts and materials and by helping the people of Kenya to learn a variety of trades. To make a tax-deductible donation or to learn more, visit http://www.kenyaschoolproject.org/. For more about the Coastal Ridge birdhouse auction, call 363-1800.
