York stylist joins Harbour Beauty Shoppe

YORK - Shannon Hartman said it's important to her that her clients feel beautiful.
For example, last week she styled up-dos for York High School prom-goers and was proud of her work. However, she felt bad for a friend of one of the girls who had her hair done at another salon and started crying because she was unhappy with the style.
"I love to make people feel good about themselves," said Hartman. "I would never leave them unhappy ... It would just break my heart."
Hartman, 19, has lived in York since childhood and in November joined Harbour Beauty Shoppe owned by Diedre Parshley, in the historic Lancaster Block near Harbor Beach.
She said communication is the way to make sure that clients are happy with their results.
"Communication is the biggest thing," said Hartman, who added that in a consultation she will use visuals to make sure she and the customer see eye to eye.
Hartman said the beauty business is also about trust. As a stylist she can recommend what works best with certain features, facial characters or even body types. For example, she said a person who is petite would be better off not having very long hair because it would be overwhelming.
She is able to offer a wide range of services at the Harbour Beauty Shoppe, including hair cuts, color services, highlights, perms, waxing, manicures, pedicures and ear coning - a procedure that removes debris and wax from the ear canal, which can help someone who experiences frequent migraines.
"After you get up from it you feel cleansed," said Hartman.
Hartman said the casual atmosphere of the salon makes it easy for customers to relax. Clients also include men and children whose haircuts only cost $10. Women's cuts are $35. Walk-ins are welcome and she is accepting new clients.
"I personally think it's very homey, very quaint," she said. "We have a little bit of everybody coming in here."
