KSB warns against e-mail scam

YORK - A new e-mail scam has been launched against consumers in southern Maine in the form of a fraudulent e-mail alert that appears to be coming from Kennebunk Savings Bank.

Bank officials contacted customers within hours of some of the first fraudulent e-mails to make them aware that the message was not generated by Kennebunk Savings Bank (KSB).

The fraudulent e-mail includes what appears to be the bank's logo and a message alleging that the recipient's account had experienced too many failed log-on attempts. The accounts are threatened with suspension unless the recipients log onto a new website where they are asked to enter their personal banking information such as account numbers, debit card numbers and personal identification numbers.

"This email has absolutely no connection to Kennebunk Savings Bank. It is what is called a 'phishing' scam and as a member of Maine Anti-Phishing Coalition, we want to raise public awareness and educate people on how to avoid being caught up in this type of situation," said KSB President Ken Reed in a release issued on Thursday, April 19.

Reed pointed out that in all communications, KSB repeatedly reminds its customers that the bank will never ask for such information via e-mail.

"This is not a breach in security of the Kennebunk Savings Bank systems; rather, it is a criminal attempt to fool people into giving up personal information," he added.

Anyone who receives an e-mail of this type is asked to contact KSB Customer Care at (800) 339-6573 or to call or visit one of the KSB branches, including the financial center and Woodbridge Road branches in York.

"Customer account information security is a top priority at Kennebunk Savings Bank and in no situation should anyone enter their personal information when they receive such an unsolicited request," Reed said.
