A MODERN TAKE ON A CLASSIC STORY. The York High School Players will perform a new one-act play based on Shirley Jackson's classic tale, "The Lottery," this weekend. Pictured here, characters in the play stand at attention as their company's owner speaks to them at a recent rehearsal. Performances are this Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, at the York High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., and are appropriate for anyone middle-school age or older. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and may be purchased at the door. For more information, call York High School at 363-3621.

A NIGHT OF HONORS. York High School students were treated to a special evening out in recognition of their excellence in academic achievement last Thursday, May 3, at the York High School Commons. The York High School Academic Boosters hosted the annual Honors Banquet at 6:30 p.m., where teachers donned their serving attire and tended to honor students like Jamie Mercurio, pictured here with her mom, while German teacher Alice O'Connor, also known as "Little Frau," serves up a spring salad. The Freshman Honors Night is scheduled for this Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m.

Town and school officials have a message for Augusta. Following an executive session at its meeting last Wednesday, May 2, the School Committee agreed unanimously to appoint Sean Murphy as the new principal of Coastal Ridge Elementary School. Young artists from area schools will exhibit their artwork at the 29th Annual Student Art Show at the Barn Gallery this weekend. When it comes to meeting the annual yearly progress requirements of the No Child Left Behind mandate, the York School Department is once again holding its own. The York High School Concert and Jazz Band will be performing its spring concert this coming Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m.
