Busy week of action for York Little League

YORK - Local major and minor league softball and baseball teams were busy with a full slate of games in the past week.

In major league softball on May 1, it was the Angels with 8 and the Rangers with 7. The Rangers' Ashley Lomasney had 5-Ks, and Rebecca Siegel had 4-Ks. Nicole Dellapasqua, Kelsey Elsemore and Eleni Zotos all had great hits for the Rangers. Nicole Heroux, Amanda Fiorentino and Sarah Tewksbury had great hits for the Angels, including a walk-off game-winning hit.

The Angels defeated the Red Sox 14 to 10 on Saturday, despite a late rally by the Red Sox. Nicole Heroux belted two home runs and drove in five runs for the Angels who took an early lead in the game. Angels' pitcher Gabrielle Benoit pitched five strong innings, striking out six batters.

The Red Sox rallied for four runs in the sixth inning on a grand-slam by Colleen Keenan, who led the Red Sox with five RBIs. Ivy Sheehan and Jennie McPhail each tripled for the Red Sox.

Sarah Tewksbury came on to pitch the sixth inning for the Angels, struck out two batters and sealed the Angels' victory.

In major league baseball on May 1 it was the As with 10 and the Padres, 2.

Luke Caulfin pitched five strong innings, striking out six batters and Anthony Sciaudone went three-for with a triple, double and three RBIs.

Ross Hogan, Trenton Spencer and Nick Goulette each had hits for the As. Taylor Newton, Cole Merrit and Cameron Frecker each played well for the Padres.

Also in major league play, the Blue Jays scored early and often en-route to their 11 to 7 win over the Padres.

Daniel Bock picked up the win while striking out five. Tim Connolly led the Blue Jays' offensive charge with a first-inning, three-run shot over the left field fence and a second inning RBI double. Tommy Arsenault (2 RBI, 2 doubles, single) and Greg Filias (RBI double) also contributed to the Blue Jays' attack.

Taylor Newton launched a solo home run over the center field fence in the second inning for the Padres. Hayden Webster had a two-run scoring double and the Padres rallied for four runs in the fifth inning.

Andrew LaMonica closed the game out for the Blue Jays by striking out the side, in order, in the sixth.

Eight runs in the first inning proved to be just enough as the As hung on to beat the Phillies 12 to 9. Trenton Spencer, Braden Dunn and Brendan Carney all had hits and scored runs. Nick Goulette pitched a fine game with eight strikeouts. The Phillies scored six times in the bottom of the sixth with the help of Jackson Mitchell's two-run homerun. Also getting two hits each were Sean McKenna, James McCafferty and Ian Mcfarlane.

 The As beat the Nationals 7 to 3 at a Smith Field night game. Anthony Sciaudone's 10 strikeouts and Ross Hogan's two-run homerun led the way for the As win. Also getting hits were Thomas Kinton and Conall Anderson.

For the Nationals, Spencer Fox pitched a good game while Mitchell Benoit, Bailey McKenna and Alex Janetti provided the hits, including a last inning rally that threatened to tie the game with the bases loaded, but fell short.

In minor league baseball on April 30, the Devil Rays and Royals played to a 7 to 7 tie. The D-Rays got a strong pitching performance by Josh White and run saving defensive plays by Grant Mahoney and Malcolm Hughes. Camden Turner's bat stayed hot with three hits while Jack Bouchard chipped in with two hits.

On May 3 it was the Royals with 9 and the Cubs with 4. Jack Neary had a great game for the Royals as he picked up a win on the mound and also went two for two at the plate. The Royals also had some clutch hitting from Zack Handley who had a single and a double as well as Austin Smith, who had two singles and scored a run. 

Cameron Curtin chipped in for the Cubs when he hit a clutch double in the fourth inning scoring one of the Cubs' four runs. The Cubs also got some good offense from Sean Tourigny who had two singles in the game. On the defensive side of the ball, Reid Hogan played a great game for the Cubs. The Cubs had also tied the Royals back on April 28 with six runs for each team.

The Reds beat the Orioles 8 to 4 in a well-played game by both teams. Chris D'Aquila had two hits and started the game for the Reds on the mound. The Reds got a great defensive game played by Hunter Hendriksen. Graham Guthrie went two for two at the plate picking up the win while brother Garret Guthrie earned the save while also chipping in with a double.

Phil Zeller pitched well for the Orioles. Garrett Lillie had a couple of hits and played great defense at first base. Rory Day and Rex Brockelman also had a hits for the Os while his brother Todd struck out four batters in an inning and a third of work.

The Reds held off the Giants 4 to 3. The Reds were led on the mound by Graham Guthrie who had 11 strikeouts and made a great catch to end the game. Garrett Guthrie earned the save. Andrew Davis helped the offense with a double and scored a run.

The Giants were led on offense by Joe Yauch and had a fine pitching performance by Chris Young. Griffin Mercer also pitched well in relief.

On May 5 it was the Tigers 3, Cubs 1. Kyle Peterson hit a two-run home run early in the game for the Tigers. Nick York hit a double and Steven Reid hit a nice double and a triple to left center field. Joe Albert was the starting pitcher and struck out 10 players for the Tigers. Kyle Peterson relieved Joe Albert at the mound and fielded a grounder for the final out .

A great defensive effort was put in by both teams. Reid Hogan caught a line drive off the bat of Lars Lauersen. Ben Moulton and Sean Tourigny had several nice defensive plays from shortstop to first base for the outs. Ian Hovde pitched 2 shut out innings with nine strike outs relieved by Spencer Cribby.

The Devil Rays defeated the Orioles, 7 to 4, on Saturday in a hard-fought game. The Devil Rays got a strong pitching performance by hard-throwing Adam Schoff while Jack Bouchard struck out eight coming on in relief. Malcolm Hughes and Jack Bouchard led the Devil Rays' bats with some clutch hitting, while teammate Matt Robidoux sealed the victory with a game winning RBI.

 The Orioles were led by Jackson Hay, who was on base twice and scored a run. Nick Noerdlinger and Colby Berger had hits for the Orioles.
