The Appraiser's Network will be having their next monthly breakfast meeting at 8 a.m. on May 16 at Norma's Restaurant. Joining us for our May meeting will be Speaker Glenn Cummings and other representatives from his office to discuss LD 1869, the homeowners protection act, which will make changes to the current laws regarding how mortgage brokers are regulated. The Costs of Closure: Impacts of Bacterial Contamination at Swimming Beaches will be held at the Wells Reserve on May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. Dr. Linwood Pendleton provides insight on how people choose a beach and the risks faced by towns when water quality harms a beach's reputation. Free Antique Appraisal. You are invited to bring one small item to Active Aging Expo and have it appraised by Julianne Kane of Front Porch Appraisal Services. Green Art will host Build a Brick Walkway and the next event in the Children's Gardening Workshop Series on May 19. All the steps to laying a brick walkway will be demonstrated, but the walkway class will focus on the hardest part:  leveling the base surface. Taught by Thomas Berger, the class will begin at 9:30 a.m. The children's workshop will focus on which blooms attract hummingbirds and each child will design a hummingbird basket to take home. Hugs Sweet Hugs. Make a bear for free to be donated to children awaiting a forever family at Build-A-Bear Workshop® as you help stuff bears with extra hugs and love for children in need of permanent, safe and loving families. Beginning at 10 a.m. on May 19, the first 200 guests at each of the more than 270 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia are invited to participate in "Stuffed with Hugs: Hugs Sweet Hugs" and make a bear for free that will be sent to children awaiting adoption. Laudholm in Legend and Song on May 17 at 7 p.m. will feature stories, songs, and poems celebrating the 25-year history of Laudholm Trust at the Wells Reserve, followed by fun, old-time desserts. Free, but reservations are requested at 646-1555.

The Maine Federation of Republican Women will hold its quarterly meeting, hosted by the Portland Business Women's Club on May 23 at 10 a.m. at Verrillo's Restaurant, Riverside Street, Portland. Coffee, tea and breakfast pastries will be served.

Old York Garden Club Annual Plant Sale is May 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Grant House on Route 1. The sale is held rain or shine and there is plenty of free parking.

Spring Fling at the Hamilton House is May 19. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. activities will take place on the grounds of the historic Hamilton House on Vaughn's Lane in South Berwick. A family festival intended for all ages, the day will offer events for many interests. Admission is free for Historic New England members, $6 for adults, $4 for children five and older and free for preschoolers. Rain or shine.

Summer Art Camp at Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk introduces a summer of inspiring visual arts experiences for children ages 9 to 13 called "Heartwood Bound." The camp program provides children with the opportunity to work closely with professional artist/teachers in a creative, supportive environment. Class size is limited to nine participants, and campers can sign up for one, two, three or four two-week sessions. Early registration is encouraged due to the limited class size. York County Master Gardeners will be hosting an Open House and Plant Sale at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office at the Anderson Learning Center in Springvale on May 19 from 9 a.m. to noon.

EXHIBITS, MUSIC, THEATRE AND MORE

The African Children's Choir will touch your spirit with their charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances at a concert on May 16 at 7 p.m., Messiah Christian Church, 2700 Post Rd, Wells. The concert will also feature a mixture of well-loved children's songs, traditional spirituals and contemporary tunes. There is no admission charge for this community concert. A free-will offering will be taken to support the African Children's Choir's ministries, providing education, care and emergency relief of for over 7,000 children in Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan, Kenya and South Africa.

First Public Performance of Susan Poulin in "The Full Angel" will be May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Portland Sports Complex at The Dome, 512 Warren Avenue. Suggested donation is $3 and doors open at 6:30 p.m. "The Full Angel" is a portrait of a family reshaped by a parent's illness, a story both moving and humorous. Susan's spoken words will be projected for people who are hard of hearing and there will be a sign-language interpreter. Presented by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. G. Marshall Store Gallery features  "Momentum V," an exhibition of the 2006 New Hampshire Charitable Foundation's Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement grantee, Barbara Rita Jenny, and six finalists, Daisy Adams, Tim Christensen-Kirby, Kristina Logan, Gail Spaien, Carol Stein and Cappy Whelan through June 3. In the Dock Level Gallery, "Al Jaeger:  Ceramic Landscapes" features organic forms, spare use of glazes and washes, and the textures created by using sand, gravel or coffee grounds to convey the artist's love and respect for his natural surroundings. "Looking Up," the annual Heartwood Student Exhibition, in the Heartwood College Gallery, continues through May 25 featuring work by all current Heartwood students, with a special focus on the work of graduating Heartwood BFA students Brandy Cressey and Jessica Wagstaff. The Music Hall presents Broadway superstar Patti LuPone on May 18 with her cabaret show, "Coulda Woulda  Shoulda" and will celebrate New Orleans on May 20 with some of the city's greatest musical artists including Dr. John The Night Tripper, the Rebirth Brass Band and the legendary pianist Henry Butler. HEALTH

SMMC Screening Day at its facility in Saco, on Industrial Park Drive, in celebration of Mother's Day will provide women with all of the following services during the same appointment: clinical exam by a nurse practitioner, pap test and mammogram. All screening tests and medical exams will be provided at no cost to women who are between the ages of 30 and 64, have no insurance or have insurance with a high deductible or that does not cover the cost of the tests and meet certain income guidelines. PUBLIC SUPPERS

Spaghetti Dinner this Friday will benefit the Maine Chapter of the Dream Factory, a nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children diagnosed with critical or chronic illnesses who are between the ages of 3 and 18 years old. The dinner will be held at Norma's Restaurant on May 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and children, and free for children under the age of 5.

WORKSHOPS

The Forest of Maine Teachers' Tours still has openings for this summer. Renewable energy from Maine forests and mills and bioproducts and biofuels will be the focus of this years tours. A Project Learning Tree Workshop will be offered on each tour, with Maine Forest Service Biometrician Ken Laustsen leading a discussion on meeting society's needs for materials, chemicals and fuels through research and development of bioproducts from Maine's forests. Educators will tour renewable energy and wood products facilities, visit active harvests using modern equipment and discuss the information and planning required to practice sustainable forestry with landowners, foresters, loggers, mill owners and scientists. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club a la Carte offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! The International Women's Club of New England (IWCNE) meets for lunch on the fourth Saturday of every month with an international speaker. Old York Garden Club's Open Garden Days, new for 2007, is a unique garden tour. Gentle Yoga with Janet Clark begins this June at Yoga on York. The Southern Maine Agency on Aging facilitates a monthly support group in Kittery for people assisting older adult loved ones. SUPPORT

A Safe Place, a non-profit agency, has been providing support services and emergency shelter to victims of domestic abuse for over 28 years. A Safe Place has offices in Portsmouth, Rochester and Salem, N.H. FMI or to reach an advocate call 1-(800) 854-3552.

Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
