Ongoing and upcoming events at the library
YORK VILLAGE - Events in May and June will offer something for everyone at the York Public Library.
WRITERS' NIGHT
On Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m., local writers Katharine Davis, author of "Capturing Paris," and Cheryl Drake Harris, author of "Lily's Ghost," will talk about the art of writing a novel and the spirit that energizes the process.
LIVE AT THE LIBRARY
On Sunday, May 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., enjoy a Coffee House Concert featuring local musicians. This is the first in a series of live musical events at the library.
SPECIAL JUNE WRITERS NIGHT
On Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m., the York Public Library will host noted author Ann Beattie and Maine's Poet Laureate, Betsy Sholl, who will read from their works and discuss their writing. Ann Beattie, short story writer and novelist, has received critical acclaim for her depiction of the generation of Americans who grew up in the 1960s. Betsy Sholl has published six collections of poetry, most recently "Late Psalm," from the University of Wisconsin Press, 2004. She has been a visiting poet at the University of Pittsburgh and Bucknell University. RiverRun Books will be on hand with copies of the authors' books. Admission is free.
ART AT THE LIBRARY
Todd Bezold and Michael Walek, both of York, are celebrating the arrival of spring with a joint exhibition of paintings at the York Public Library through May 31. Both artists draw inspiration from the natural world, preferring to paint from life whenever and wherever possible.
York Art Association member Louise M. Whelton exhibits her watercolors of barns and birds in the Kennebunk Room for the month of May.
IN THE CHILDREN'S ROOM
Weekly programs for children at the York Public Library include Miss Kate's Infant Lap, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., with the last program until the autumn on May 29; Preschool Story Time, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., with the last program until the autumn on May 31, and Toddler Story Time, Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Monthly programs for children and parents that are held October through May include Making Music Monthly, the first Wednesday of each month from 10:15 to10:45 a.m.; Tactile Toddler Time, the second Tuesday of each month from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.; Babies, Boppies and Books, the second Thursday of each month from 10:15 to 11 a.m., and Art by the Pond, the third Tuesday of each month, from 10:15 to 11 a.m.
