Library users say it best
By Robert Waldman
Library Director
Children from Jack and Jill Preschool sang songs from around the world at the school's third annual benefit concert, held at the York Public Library on Friday, April 27. The three- and four-year-olds practiced with Music Director Laurie Mitchell to benefit two causes: books-on-CD for children and the beautification of the York Public Library's exterior. For the library, the concert raised funds to place big flowerpots filled with flowers at the library's front door, and the children will plant bulbs in the fall. When the donations were counted, the children had raised $482.

Election Day approaches. It has been an incredible year in which the library has hosted activities and meetings of all kinds, loaned a range of materials and provided a comfortable place to read and imagine as you pursue your interests. The York Public Library exists to "engage the community." We want to thank you in advance of the election for all the support the York community has given us. We appreciate your kind words when you come to visit and your words that have appeared in our local papers.
What follows are quotations from letters to the editor over the past month:
"During the recent Patriot's Day storm, our house was without power. Needing warmth, company and comfort, we sought refuge at the York Public Library. Thank you to all of the York Library staff for doing a wonderful job." - Bobbie & Brian McGann, The Independent, May 2.
"Before Minerva, most of us had to buy our book selection... Now we are able to access the copies of the book from multiple libraries. The system even allows you to request books via computer. It's quick, easy and convenient." - Members of a book group, Marty Dignan, Lucy Andrews, Paula Bogard, Kathy Eubank, Susan Fryling, Linda Moore and Nancy Rohrer, The Independent, April 11.
"The foresight of the library has provided an opportunity to view art in a familiar setting." - Michael Walek and Todd Bezold, The Independent, May 2.
"What a vacation at the library. We participated in four different activities the library offered for children during the week, plus went to just pick up books and read. Our library has so much to offer." - Heidi, Lily and Bailey Oliver, The Independent, April 25.
"Children have a place where they can attend story hours, participate in crafts, attend special programs, check out books and even purchase slightly used books. A special thank you to Robert and his staff for their time and effort in providing all of us with so very much." - Bertha H. Rocray, director, Jack & Jill Nursery School, The Independent, April 4.
This is your public library - more than just books DVDs, CDs, computers, warmth, light and comfortable chairs. The staff is a team of dedicated people committed to meeting our community's needs as best we can today, tomorrow and into the future.
