Perkins Cove fire quickly doused

By Melissa Wood

OGUNQUIT - Barnacle Billy's Etc. restaurant in Perkins Cove received minor damage last Wednesday, May 9, when a floodlight ignited plywood beams near the roof.

Fire Chief Ed Smith said the Ogunquit Fire Department responded after a report of smoke in the upstairs part of the building. By using a thermal imaging device, they found glowing beams in the plywood under the roof. Fire officials then cut out part of the roof and quickly extinguished the fire.

"There was some property damage, but nothing serious," said Smith, who added that the restaurant was able to open as scheduled the next day.

Smith said the fire was caused by a floodlight that was either pointing the wrong way or installed too close to the building. The building's roof had just been re-shingled, and the floodlight had been reinstalled.

Firefighters from York Beach and Wells also responded to the scene. Smith said the other departments were immediately called as a precaution because of the size of the building.
