Busy season for York Little League continues
YORK - A glance at the full list of Little League scores racked up in recent weeks is a sure indicator that spring sports are well underway.
May 12 Major League Baseball: Nationals 14, Blue Jays 2
The Nationals took advantage of an 11-run first inning to jump to an early lead and maintained it through fine pitching by Bailey McKenna. Spencer Fox hit a three-run homer; Donald Goodrich and Mitchell Benoit each had two hits. McKenna, Tanner Robinson, Jimmy Orso, Adam Janetti and Alex Janetti also each had a hit for the Nats.
For the Blue Jays, Andrew LaMonica started them off with an inside-the-park home run. Tom Arsenault, Connor Smith, Adam Legg and Tim Connolly also all had hits for the Jays.
On the mound, McKenna struck out six batters for the Nationals and went the distance. For the Blue Jays, LaMonica struck out two batters and Legg and Smith had a strikeout each in relief as well.
May 7 Major League Baseball: Twins 2, Athletics 1
In a good old fashioned pitchers' duel the Twins beat the Athletics 2 to 1. Adam Bailey had 10 strikeouts while Tim Gauthier scored both runs after getting on with walks. Luke Claflin recorded 11 strikeouts and also knocked in the As' only run with an RBI double.
May 8 Major League Baseball: Athletics 7, Marlins 2
The As turned a 1-2-3 double play to get out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth and hold on against the Marlins, 7 to 2. Luke Claflin, Ross Hogan, Nick Darby and Nick Goulette all had hits for the As.
For the Marlins, Kyle Cone, Matt Pratt, Will Donovan and Michael Khan all had hits
May 9 Major League Baseball: Astros 13, Nationals 4
The Astros prevailed this time in a pitchers' rematch with Evan McElwain of the Astros again taking on Mitchell Benoit of the Nationals. McElwain struck out five and Benoit fanned six, but this time there was plenty of bat contact and good fielding on both sides until the fifth inning, when the Astros rallied for a 10-run inning to win the game.
For the Nationals, Donald Goodrich started off the game with a home run belted off of the first pitch. Benoit singled but was stranded.
The Astros followed suit in the bottom of the first with hits by Michael Gallagher, Evan McElwain and Aaron Todd, which allowed them to take a 2-1 lead.
Both teams battled through a scoreless inning in the second.
The third saw Goodrich get another hit and steal home to tie the game, and Tanner Robinson's tater over the fence put the Nationals ahead. In the bottom half of that inning Alex Mercurio smashed a hard-thrown fastball into Kittery to tie the game at three apiece.
Another scoreless inning happened in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Goodrich again singled and Bailey McKenna hit him home to put the Nationals up 4 to 3. However, the bottom of the fifth looked like a different ballgame. Gallagher's lead off triple spawned an onslaught with four more hits by Kevin Barrett, McElwain, Donohoe and Mercurio, in combination with six walks and one hit batter, plus four successful Astro home base steals, to give the Astros a 10-run inning and put them on top for good.
Goodrich and McKenna provided pitching relief for the Nationals, and Todd closed the game for the Astros with three strikeouts in the sixth, despite Robinson's single and Spencer Fox's double, which launched an unsuccessful rally.
May 7 Major League Softball: Rangers 10, Red Sox 8
For the Rangers, Nicole DellaPasqua had 7-K's, and for the Red Sox, Ivy Sheehan had 5-K's. Ashley Lomasney, Hannah Cooper, Alexa Bando and Kelsey Elsemore all had Rangers hits. DellaPasqua had her first home run of the season. For the Red Sox, Colleen Keenan, Sierra Swasey and Marquis MacGlashing all had hits.
May 9 Major League Softball: Rangers 13, Angels 5
Ashley Lomasney of the Rangers had three strikeouts, and the Angels' Lisa King and Gabby Benoit combined for five strikeouts. Sarah Tewksbury, Nicole Heroux, Olivia Broderick and Keyana Reid all had hits for the Angels. For the Rangers, Tory Knoepfel, Maddie Patten, Patty McMurray and Mariah Massey all had hits as well.
May 11 Major League Softball: Diamondbacks 8, Rangers 8
Carly Johnson of the Diamondbacks and had eight strikeouts, and for the Rangers Ashley Lomasney fanned four. The Rangers scored the first six runs of the game with help from Megan Boria-Meyer, Hannah Cooper, Kelsey Elsemore, Patty McMurray and Eleni Zotos. Abigail Goodrich, Carly Johnson and Halle Ayers helped the Diamondbacks come back with six runs. Defensively, both teams were on the ball, making great plays. Tory Knoepfel made a great tag at home plate to keep the Diamondbacks from scoring a winning run.
April 30 Minor League Baseball: Devil Rays 7, Royals 7
Brayton Chayer pitched in his first Little League game and struck out nine batters in three and a half innings and walked four batters. Zack Handley and Austin Smith also pitched.
Jack Neary hit two doubles in the game and scored in the fifth inning. Nick Heyland had a single in the fourth inning and scored twice in the game. Justin O'Donnell, Ryan Webb and Joshua Tapley all contributed to a good defensive game. Graem Timmons also scored on a well-hit single by Smith, who earned an RBI. Patrick Hannigan hit a solid double in the bottom of the fifth scoring Neary and Heyland for the tie.
May 3 Minor League Baseball: Royals 9, Cubs 4
The Royals defeated the Cubs 9 to 4 in five innings backed by outstanding pitching and defense performances. The Royals scored six runs in the first inning and kept the lead throughout the game.
Starting pitcher Jack Neary tossed a solid three and a half innings striking out five batters while walking three. He also had an excellent defensive game at the mound. Austin Smith came in to finish the game pitching with five strikeouts and a couple of great defensive plays at the mound, along with two well hit singles. Zach Handley played a good all-around game at first base and behind the plate then hitting both a single and a double at bat. Graem Timmons, Ryan Webb and Joshua Tapley all contributed with singles, good base running and some nice defensive plays. Will Duffy joined the team in his first game after an early season injury kept him on the sidelines for the first two games.
May 9 Minor League Baseball: Rockies 11, Cubs 0
The Rockies played the Cubs on May 9 at Smith Field. Colby Todd threw three shut-out innings for the Rockies with plenty of run support. The Rockies recorded 16 hits including triples by Trevor Labonte and Blaine Farrell. Ted Warnquist, Brandon Wong and Trevor Martin each had three RBIs in the 11 to 0 Rockies victory. Reliever Tyler Thornton struck out six batters to close the shut-out game. The Cub's Delapena singled in the first inning and walked in the fifth inning batting 1.000 on the night.
May 9 Minor League Baseball: Royals 9, Pirates 5
The Royals started out the first inning with five hits. Jack Neary had a single and a double in the game and Josh Tapley hit two doubles. Austin Smith hit a double and had a great defensive game. Graem Timmons hit two sacrifice flies and earned an RBI. Brayton Chayer pitched for 3 innings with five strikeouts. Nick Heyland also had two hits, a single and a double.
May 10 Minor League Baseball: Giants 10, Tigers 0
Jonah Mitchell led the way both on the mound and at the plate, recording a complete game shutout (7 K's, one BB) and contributing two hits. Mitchell also led the Giants' defense, recording five putouts, one of which stopped a bases-loaded rally for the Tigers. The Tigers hit the ball very well, with Nick Walsh and Kyle Petersen having a great game at the plate. Joe Albert threw outstanding relief in the losing cause. Forrest Kelley, Joe Yauch and Owen Talley were able to ignite the Giants' offense.
May 10 Minor League Baseball: Pirates 5, Devil Rays 2
The Pirates defeated the Devil Rays 5 to 2, backed by strong defense and solid pitching. Jack McDonald pitched four innings for the Devil Rays, striking out eight while giving up two runs. Malcolm Hughes got the D-Ray offense started with a triple deep into the outfield and pitch well in relief in his mound debut. Jack Bouchard contributed with a key defensive play behind the plate, retrieving a bunt and tagging out the running attempting to score from third. Ben Finitz and Jack McDonald each had an RBI for the Rays.
May 12 Minor League Baseball: Giants 3, Royals 0
In a closely fought contest, the Giants prevailed thanks to key RBIs by Cody Spicer, Brad Kelly and Chris Young. Joe Yauch threw a complete game shutout for the Giants, striking out 11 while walking only one. The Giants' defense came through in the clutch, with Andrew Young making two spectacular putouts from third base in the fifth inning to rob sure hits. The Royals saw an outstanding pitching performance from Jack Neary and Nick Heyland, while Pat Hannigan, Heyland, Ryan Webb and Josh Tapley each had a hit for the Royals.
May 12 Minor League Baseball: Reds 3, Devil Rays 1
Graham and Garrett Guthrie combined to no-hit the Devil Rays while also striking out 16 batters. Alex Beaulieu and Nick Pomer both played excellent defense behind the plate. Tucker Hendrikson and Andrew Davis had a hits and also scored runs for the Reds. For the Devil Rays, Grant Mahoney, Joshua White and Adam Schoff all pitched well. Jack Bouchard also made a fabulous play at shortstop, saving several runs while Jack McDonald was also solid at second base and Eddie Bengston played very well at third for the Devil Rays.
