HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY CASSATT. Mary-Jane Merrill and first graders from Village Elementary School celebrated the birthday of Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt with lunch at the Dockside Restaurant on Monday, May 21. Cassatt was born on May 23, 1844. According to Mary Harding, who told the students that her favorite subject to paint was children, if she were there and could see them all dressed up for the occasion, she would “pull out her paint and pull out her easel and paint you all.” The students voted on which of Cassatt's paintings to put on the cake, pictured here, deciding on "Children Playing on the Beach" by just one vote. Owen Dyer makes the cake each year for the birthday celebration. And the answer is: we don't know yet. Coastal Ridge Elementary School teacher Deb Bradburn has received the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This June, for the third consecutive year, the all-volunteer York Education Foundation will present grants to local teachers who have come up with innovative ideas to enrich the classroom experience for their students. Help support longtime York High School teacher Jack Hoyt in his battle against cancer by attending a fundraiser next Thursday, May 31.
