Rainy weather not enough to douse Little League spirit

YORK - Despite the month's uncooperative weather, there has been plenty of Little League action for both the major and minor teams in town.

Major League Softball: May 14, Red Sox 11 - Rangers 7

The Monday night major league softball game pitted the Red Sox against a very strong Rangers team. The Red Sox came away with the win, 11 - 7. 

The Rangers sent Alexa Bando to the mound, who went the distance and struck out four.  Ivy Sheehan came away with the win, completing the whole game, and had seven strikeouts. The Red Sox offense was on fire with Marquis MacGlashing and Colleen Keenan going three for four each at the plate. Jessie Foggarty, Sierra Swasey, Jennie McPhail, Ivy Sheehan, Heather Evans and Paige McElwain all contributed at the plate with hits. Sara Panteleos and Kendall Carr did an amazing job splitting the catching duties for the Red Sox.

The Rangers had Tory Knoepfel catching for them, who had several great defensive plays. The Rangers offense was lead by Alexa Bando (two for three), Ashley Lomasney (two for four) and Kelsey Elsemore and Nicki DellaPasqua, each with hits. 

Major League Baseball: May 19, Blue Jays 9 - Twins 2

The Blue Jays' offense provided winning pitcher Andrew LaMonica all the run support he would need in a 9-2 win over the Twins. Tommy Arsenault (3 hits, 3 RBI), Connor Smith (2 hits, 4 RBI), Daniel Bock (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Dillon Goslin (1 hit, 1 run) had key hits for the Jays. Adam Legg and Bock also pitched well for the Jays.

For the Twins, Tim Gauthier reached base three times, scored a run and turned a nice 6-3 double play. Jared Clausen added a hit, a sacrifice fly and scored a run for the Twins.

Major League Baseball: May 20, Nationals 7 - Marlins 6

In a close game, the Nationals edged the Marlins in extra innings. On the mound for the Marlins, Zach Leal struck out eight batters and Kyle Cone fanned three in relief.

For the Nationals, Donald Goodrich struck four out, Bailey McKenna provided middle relief and fanned three and Mitchell Benoit closed with seven strikeouts.

Offensively for the Marlins, Leal and Matt Pratt each had two hits, and Michael Kahn, Matt Kahn, Eli Loeffler and Cone each had a hit as well.

For the Nationals, Donald Goodrich went four for four, including a triple off the right field fence. Spencer Fox launched his second home run in as many games with a two-run tater. Bailey McKenna had a triple, Benoit doubled, Alec Steffenberg and Ben Wallace also each had a hit for the Nats. The teams were tied at six a piece at the end of the sixth inning.

When the seventh inning came around it was anyone's game as the Marlins got up to bat. Loeffler singled to get on base, Cone also singled but Loeffler was forced out at second. The next batter struck out and the following walked, but the last batter was struck out swinging to end the first half of the inning, leaving two Marlin runners stranded.

For the Nationals, Goodrich led off with a single but was thrown out at second by Pratt on a close attempt to steal. McKenna walked, Benoit sacrificed to advance him to third and Robinson was walked intentionally to put runners on first and third with two outs. Spencer Fox singled deep to right to drive in McKenna for the walk-off win.

The Marlins and Nationals will play again Tuesday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at Smith Field.

Minor League Baseball: May 19, Pirates 4 - Giants 4

The Giants and Pirates battled to a 4-4 tie. Leading the way for the Giants were Owen Talley and Chris Young, each hitting a triple to drive in the four runs, with strong pitching by Chris Young and relief pitcher Forest Kelley. The Pirates were led by a key hit from Graham Giffen with a bases-loaded triple, and a key hit by Thatcher Parenteau, with strong pitching by Liam Bonner and relief pitcher Jordan Pidgeon.

Minor League Baseball: May 19, Devil Rays 9 - Orioles 4

The Devil Rays beat the Orioles 9-4 in Minor League action. The Orioles received strong pitching from Sam Desmarais, who struck out five batters. Offensively, Phil Zeller launched a two-run single and Matt Trainor made it to base safely twice for the Orioles.

For the Devil Rays, Jack Bouchard struck out five batters in three innings on the mound, and Jack McDonald relieved him with five strikeouts as well. Eddie Bengston and Joshua White provided strong defense for the Rays, and Joe Cooper made an unassisted double play. Offensively for the Rays, Bouchard reached base four times, and Joe Cooper, Bengston and Adam Schoff all got on base three times each to help pave the way for the win.

  Minor League Baseball: Pirates 5 - Devil Rays 2

 The Pirates secured their first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the Devil Rays at Smith Field. Liam Boner took the mound for the Pirates in a solid outing, and was bolstered by solid hitting from Thatcher Parenteau, Matt Ford and Jordan Pidgeon.

For the Devil Rays, Jack McDonald pitched four innings, striking out eight while giving up two runs. Malcolm Hughes got the Devil Ray offense started with a triple deep into the outfield, and he also pitched well in relief in his mound debut. Jack Bouchard contributed with a key defensive play behind the plate, retrieving a bunt and tagging the runner out who attempted to score from third. Ben Finitz and Jack McDonald each had an RBI for the Rays.
