5K Road Race will benefit York Hospitals Community Exercise Program
YORK - The York Parks and Recreation Department and York Hospital will host the annual York Hospital 5K Road and Cross Country Race on Saturday, June 2.
Proceeds from the race have been designated for the hospital's Rehab Services Community Fitness Program, a free exercise program staffed entirely by York Hospital's Physical Therapy Group.
The program meets twice weekly with area seniors in Wells, Ogunquit, Kittery, Eliot and York. Exercises are tailored to meet the individual needs of each participant.
"Devised as a way for them to exercise in their own environment, it meets the physical and social needs for many who might not otherwise venture into a formal fitness facility," explained Rehab Services Leader Coralee Thomson. "We are constantly amazed and delighted by their energy and spirit."
The York Hospital 5K Road Race has generated a tremendous amount of community support, from the number of local runners to the volunteers helping hand out water and handle registration duties.
The course, which provides an opportunity for runners, walkers and joggers alike to enjoy more than three miles of York's scenic byways, begins and ends at the hospital and includes local landmarks such as the Wiggly Bridge and Steedman Woods as part of the course.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the hospital. The entrance fee is $12 in advance and $15 on race day. T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registrants.
The race begins promptly at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine, and water stops will be offered at the first and second mile markers, with refreshments at the finish line.
Also at the finish line, professional timing will give runners an accurate portrayal of their run times and a special prize will be awarded to the top male and female division winners.
