YORK - On Monday, May 21, the monsoon season had ended and the sun was out, the field was dry, but the Wildcats' bats were still soggy.
Visiting Falmouth took an early 9 to 1 lead, but the struggling York Lady Wildcats (2-9) battled back with three runs in the seventh. Unfortunately, it was not enough.
A walk, a sharp single by Nell Henderson-Brown and a two-RBI double by Becky Enright paced the seventh inning rally. Jolene Ciampa pitched a complete game and Glenn Swanson handled the catching chores.
Last Tuesday, May 15, the York Lady Wildcats (2-7) played host to their longtime rivals, the Traip Lady Rangers, and opened up with five runs in the first inning.
York used three walks, an HBP, four stolen bases plus singles by Becky Enright and Caitlin Keating in their big inning.
York starting pitcher Lissy Enright and reliever Ciampa held the young Ranger team to just three hits for the game. Meanwhile Ciampa and Keating were pacing the York attack as they added two runs in the second and third plus a final five in the fourth.
Keating had four hits, including a double and a homer, plus five RBIs and four runs scored to pace the Wildcats. Becky Enright had four hits and four runs.
York pulled off a game-ending double play when Traip had runners on first and third and attempted a double steal. Catcher Marie DePeter threw a strike to second for shortstop Linnie Blais to apply the tag and Blais' return throw to DePeter was good for the tag. Game over! Wildcats win 15-1 in five innings.
York's softball and baseball teams will see plenty of action this week with five games in five days. In addition to the Falmouth game, they were scheduled to be on the road to Fryeburg on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
Wildcats softball will host to archrival Wells today, May 23, and then host Old Orchard, in a makeup of last week's rainout, on Thursday, May 24.
The week ends with both teams on the road at Poland Regional on Friday.
The final regular season game is scheduled at Yarmouth for next Wednesday, May 30.
Playoffs are scheduled to start June 5.
