SOUNDS OF MUSIC. The Young Organist Collaborative's May 12 Recital at St. John's Church in Portsmouth, N.H., featured three organ students from York. Jon Bickerstaff III, 18, studies organ with Murray McNair at Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, where Jon also practices organ and performs for services. He has also studied classical guitar with Carlos Sabina at The Bell Center for four years. Katelyn Emerson, 15, has studied piano for eight years, currently with Barbara Flocco, and previously with Gail Adams. She studies organ at with Ray Cornils, municipal organist of Portland, and previously studied with Dr. Abbey Hallberg Siegfried. Katelyn practices organ at St. John's Church, First Parish Congregational Church, Dover, N.H., and First Baptist Church, Hampton Falls, N.H. She attended the Syracuse Pipe Organ Encounter in 2006 and studied under Jonathan Biggers of Ithaca College. Craig Lane, 14, has studied music for five years. His current piano teacher is Lisa McCoulskey of Kittery, and he studies organ with Kevin Lindsay at First United Methodist Church in Rochester, N.H. Craig practices organ at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor, where he is a member, and where he occasionally plays piano or organ during worship services. Students are pictured at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Brattle Organ, the oldest working pipe organ in the United States, imported from England circa 1708. The Young Organist Collaborative was founded in 2002 to encourage young people to study the pipe organ and provides scholarships to music students between the ages of 11 and 17 for organ lessons, master classes and summer workshops with noted organists.
