A LARGE CHECK FOR LARGE PRINT. Ed Murtha of the York Lions Club hands a check for $500 to York Public Library Director Robert Waldman for the library to purchase large-print books. Known for its eyeglass drives, as well as supporting many local causes, the York Lions Club has pledged to continue to work with the library to determine future needs for visually impaired people in the community. A recent article in American Libraries written by news anchor (journalist) Roger Mudd explains his decision to donate a collection of books to his college library. A few early paragraphs describe his experience of receiving his first library card:

It was the day I got my first library card in 1936 and I was 8. It was the Chevy Chase branch of the District of Columbia Public Library on Livingston Street just off Connecticut Avenue. My father, with his white shirt and Palm Beach suit and wearing those summer shoes that were perforated, took me. The card was of heavy manila stock with rounded corners. My name and address were typed on the card that was signed in ink by the librarian. As she and my father watched, I also signed in ink.

It was the first time my community, my society, my government had recognized me as a person, as an individual who could be trusted to take care of something, to return it on time and in good condition, and to be respectful of the rules and regulations. At age 8 I had been pronounced capable of behaving myself.

I can think of no institution more central to growing up in America than the local library.  And having a library card was a key to a world of books, adventure, and imagination that was beyond comprehension.

I would like to think that decades from now our children having had a similar experience at the York Public Library will reflect back with emotions similar to Mr. Mudd's.

Thank you for your vote in the recent election in favor of our operating budget. We are disappointed that Article 38 for the additional staff position was defeated 1,262 to 1,248. Our staff, with the help of our board, volunteers and many supporters, will continue to provide fine library service until with your vote we are able to fund this essential additional position next year.
