A GIFT FROM THE HEART. Friends and strangers alike came forward recently to help make the month of May a little brighter for the Durkin family as York High School student Jason Durkin continues his recovery from a recent bone marrow transplant. Pictured here is the May Basket, filled with items for the family, donated by members of the community. In response, the Durkin family has said they hope to be able to give back to others in just the same way. The basket itself was donated by Catherine Bosback at From the Heart. Courtesy photo

THEY'RE BACK! Coastal Ridge Elementary School bid farewell last week to two of its Odyssey of the Mind teams, which won top honors in Maine earlier this spring, as they headed off to Michigan for the OM World Finals. The students, their volunteer coaches and Horizons teacher Michele Freitag are now back in town after spending almost a week working on challenging problems, performing their own skits before huge crowds and meeting other OM-ers from around the world. Pictured here are just a few of those local students and coaches during the event. Be watching The Independent for more on the teams and their trip to the finals. Photo by Michele Freitag
"We came here to remember," said Maj. Rodney Freeman to other veterans, their families and local people who gathered for a Memorial Day service at First Parish Cemetery after the Memorial Day parade marched through York Village on Monday morning. It looks as though some 600 local property owners will no longer be able to add to their homes or prune vegetation to maintain the views they’ve always had as the town moves forward with the required adoption of state zoning changes. Editor’s note: this is the first report in a two-part special series on York’s Blaisdell Farm. Whether you're looking for self-improvement, something fun to do this summer or simply wondering how you're going to survive those 10 weeks of the year when the kids are home from school and bored after 10 minutes, York Parks and Recreation can help. After 20 years of service to the York School Department, Coastal Ridge Elementary School Principal Jane Stephenson will retire at the end of the current school year. Legislative Document 340, proposed by local legislator Rep. Dawn Hill, D-York, has become the law of the land after receiving strong support in the legislature and the governor’s endorsement. Local law enforcement officials will be serving the public in a different way this Saturday. Jonathan King remembers being one of six siblings who spent their summers at the Cape Neddick campground with their parents. York High School senior Gene Jones said that there’s been times he's chosen to take a class for the primary reason that Jack Hoyt was going to be the teacher.
SAYING NO TO DRUGS. When Macy Morrison won the York Elks’ anti-drug essay contest earlier this year it was just the beginning. The Elks announced last week that the Marshwood Elementary School student received the Drug Awareness Essay Contest Award at a recent Maine Elks Association State Convention in Portland. Macy won the local York Elks Lodge competition and advanced through the district contest to win top state honors. She is the daughter of Ron and Laurie Morrison of Eliot.
